Specialist Joinery Group were commissioned by T&A Kernoghan to undertake extensive refurbishment of the Science labs at the SAAD Centre for Pharmacology & Diabetes. This project was delivered as a summer works scheme carried out in 2 months, therefore programming of the work was of principal importance.
We have developed an excellent working relationship with this client, T&A Kernoghan over the past years, gaining repeat business. This is due to our understanding of the budgetary constraints upon the client and their requirement for value for money and having a high quality- fit for purpose robust installation.
Working with a variety of suppliers enabled us to bring the most up to date colour pallet to our clients and securing a laminate colour complementary to the college colours. We also advised the design team on the finishes appropriate for a lab environment (i.e. where corrosive substances are in use.) This enabled the design and project delivery team to create a vibrant learning environment that was fit for purpose. To ensure that the design team would be happy with the final products, we provided colour samples, door mock ups and invited them to visit a similar completed project, where the specifications were in use, thus satisfying the architect that the aesthetics of installation and the quality were correct.

Complexities
We interacted with the design team at an early stage to utilize our expertise and experience in terms of project layout and buildability. This working style encouraged open lines of communication between project stakeholders. Our discussions particularly focused upon coordinating our fit out with the M&E Installations (gas, water & electric.)
To ensure future proofing of design, we encouraged the client’s architect to install 25% of the units with manual height adjustability, to cater for possible updates in DDA Requirements. Although there was a cost premium attached to this, it was decided that it was better to proceed than have to retrofit units to provide future capacity.
Key Achievements
The time spent with the client’s design team to finalize the design was mutually beneficial, as we have been able to get it right first time, ensuring that no costly design changes occurred and ultimately that the end user is happy with the fit-out
The installation quality is fit for purpose
Agreed programme ensured deliverability to the clients programme (Classes could resume as normal in the new term). It also gave the trades required for initial installation and testing and commissioning phases definite dates that they are required on site
A proactive relationship between design team members allowed coordination of M&E designs and our installation at the earliest, resulting in no time lost due to design change
Project delivered, on time, to budget
As a result further work was commissioned to Specialist Joinery Group, working in partnership with McCombe Bros at University of Ulster, Coleraine in summer 2009
