Haven is an Irish non governmental, non political, non religious organisation working to build sustainable communities, through the provision of housing, and emergency relief and by implementing community development programmes in Haiti. The organisation was founded in late 2008 and launched in 2009 by Leslie Buckley and his wife Carmel. Leslie’s business interests brought him to Haiti for the first time in 2004. Appalled by the conditions in which the people of Haiti were and are living in, he set up Haven. By training, up-skilling and employing local Haitian people throughout the year, Haven is creating jobs and encouraging local trade and industry. Schools, playgrounds, and community buildings are key elements of Haven’s community building projects. Haven currently employs expatriate and local staff members who are based across Haiti, in Port au Prince, Gonaives, and Ouanaminthe on a full time basis. To date, Haven has also brought over 1,300 Irish volunteers to Haiti to assist with the building of houses through their Build It Week programme.
This year local volunteers include Sean O’Hagan, Liam McNally and John Paul McErlean who all work in the construction industry. They will be joining around 90 others from across Ireland and linking up with 600 volunteers from America in New York before flying to Haiti. The aim is to complete 150 houses in 1 week which will house approx 750 Haitian people who at present are living in tents provided by aid groups such as the Red Cross and Unicef. Haiti one of the most dangerous and poorest countries in the world and the earthquake has worsened the situation. All volunteers will be working under armed guard provided by private security firms and UN soldiers. The volunteers are housed in large tents off site as on site is too dangerous and they will be transported via bus to and from work daily.
It goes without saying that the local volunteers deserve immense support for the work they will undertake in Haiti and so we ask that you attend this unique event at The Elk on Saturday 12th May at 8pm to help raise awareness and funds for this cause. Call The Elk today on 028 796 50011 for further information and to book your tickets.
