Building for the Future

The Pupils of St. Killian’s Carnlough visited Specialist HQ this week. The Year 11 group attended SJG as part of their preparation for their GCSE Construction Coursework, which comprises the design and manufacture of a bespoke table. The visit also afforded the opportunity to show the 40 strong student group around Specialist HQ and highlight the roles and career progression opportunities in the Construction and Manufacturing Industry locally.

For many in this GCSE Construction Group, it was their first insight into the world of work. The group showed great enthusiasm towards the advanced technologies and automated processes on display in our 3 acre manufacturing facility. Projects currently in manufacture for leading brands and household names caught the student’s attention, as well as a strikingly large pod unit which is being manufactured for a customer in Italy.

Design Focus

The Students are currently using AutoCAD as a key component of their course. They showed great interest in our design department and took the opportunity to ask Lead Designers Mark Kelly and Daniel McCrystal to demonstrate their use of the software on current projects

Its all in the detail

Our Academy Team, lead by David Owen provided an detailed introduction to standard joinery details and jointing. The interactive presentation was really well received by the group, who asked lots of questions to help prepare them for the months ahead.

Speaking about the success of the event, Paula our Marketing Director said “Giving time to future generations is one of the most rewarding aspects of our working life at Specialist Joinery Group. From facilitating factory tours, to attending careers events in local schools to promote our Apprenticeship Programme, we all have a responsibility to share our experience of career progression opportunities available within the construction and manufacturing industry. This is something that we care passionately about.”

Thank you to the Staff and Students of St. Killian’s College, Carnlough.
